The purpose of this course is to provide a fundamental understanding of life and health insurance coverages. It addresses the histories of life and health and their evolution to the products we know today.

In this course students are introduced to:

  • the business of insurance. The types of insurance companies, the law of agency, and the very important process of underwriting.
  • elements of a valid insurance contract
  • explanation of mortality and expense charges
  • tax aspects of life insurance
  • types of life insurance, term vs. permanent
  • health insurance and its critical role in healthcare
  • traditional fee-for-service plans are compared with managed care
  • managed care and its delivery system
  • group and individual policies
  • other types of medical insurance - disability income insurance, long-term care insurance, and workers' compensation
